Juneau Egan and Yandukin Intersection Improvements

Project # SFHWY00601 (Stage 1) and SFHWY00079 (PEL Study)

The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF) is working to improve the intersection of Egan Drive and Yandukin Drive near Fred Meyer in Juneau, Alaska. The proposed project seeks to install signals and create a partial signalized intersection to help improve safety at this location.

Project Background

In response to concerns about safety, DOT&PF conducted a Planning and Environmental Linkages Study (PEL) which was completed in 2021. As part of the PEL process, DOT&PF listened to concerns from interested parties and agencies to develop a needs statement for the project, which resulted in potential solutions to enhance safety, connectivity, and reliability of the corridor as a whole. As part of the PEL, DOT&PF engaged the community and listened to feedback on what they wanted to see happen at this intersection. This public input was crucial in developing the current plan to create a partially signalized intersection at this location. A seasonal speed reduction of 45 MPH was also implemented along this stretch of road as a result of the PEL. This speed reduction is an interim measure until the partial signalized intersection can be constructed.

The final PEL report is available to read online here.

What Will It Look Like?

Currently, there are no traffic signals at this intersection and drivers are forced to turn left across oncoming traffic without the aid of a signal or other traffic control device. Based on the PEL study, DOT&PF is proposing to construct a partial signalized intersection to provide greater safety for vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists and added connectivity for non-motorized users. Vehicle turning movements from Egan Drive into the Old Dairy Road/Fred Meyer roadway will remain the same. Traffic entering Egan Drive from Yandukin Drive or Old Dairy Road will not have to stop at a signal and will be “right in” or “right out” only.

The design team is currently examining the preliminary configuration of the signal system to enhance intersection efficiency and ensure flexibility to accommodate potential future growth in the area.

Project Before and After

Project Timeline

Crews will be conducting preliminary work in this area starting in April 2025.

  • April 29: Be alert to the project team conducting a site visit to the area.
  • May: Geotechnical crews will be onsite to finalize borehole locations.
  • Late-May to Early-June: Watch for geotechnical crews drilling bore holes in the road. Crews are anticipated to work from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. seven days a week until work is complete, approximately 10 days. Be alert to changing traffic patterns. There may be temporary lane closures during this work.

The design on this project is ongoing, and we expect this project to begin construction in 2026. We anticipate holding an open house later in 2025. Continue to check this website for more information on public involvement opportunities.

Get Involved!

A lot of public engagement has already happened for this project through the PEL process, but there is still a chance to be involved! We will have multiple opportunities for the public to meet with the project team throughout the development of this project. We anticipate hosting a public open house later in 2025. Please sign up for our email list to be notified of public meetings and project progress. You are also welcome to email the project team any time with your comments.
